Oil on recycled metal number plates, shoelaces
The code is part of a series celebrating the growth of women’s AFL in Western Australia called ‘Keeping Score’.
My interest stems not from a keen interest in AFL football, but rather in the role the game plays in defining our national identity. Footy is the heart of community connection and cohesion at its best, or at its worst, underlining division and exclusion.
As an outsider to this national cult, the transcendent passions the game evokes echoes something akin to radical religious fervour: rules hidden within rules, norms within norms. In the same way a heretic risks being burned at the stake, women young and old brave the fire and scrutiny to sample a little white line fever for themselves. And I love them for it.
The wonderful women (and men) of our West Kimberley community league show us all how powerful inclusion can be. This is my way of honouring them.

THE JURY ART PRIZE
Oil on recycled metal score plates, crochet blanket, thread, tape, broomstick
This work connects past, present and future: granddaughter, daughter mother, grandmother. The forms on the metal plates are inspired by our local women’s football league in the West Kimberley, including my own daughter who is the origin of my inspiration. I paint in gratitude to these women for taking my daughter under their collective wing at a critical time in her life. The blanket is an ode to my maternal grandmother (dec.) who was an avid football fan, and who would yell at the telly and kick goals for the Eagles and Dockers from her armchair while knitting or crocheting footy blankets. The plates were from our local Derby league.
