Keeping Score @ Brunswick Street Gallery

Keeping Score is about more than sport and art. It is about how we see ourselves reflected in society, what we deem as important, and how these beliefs and values govern words and actions. In painting these fierce women, Hatherley pays homage to the many women upon whose shoulders we now have the privilege of standing. Women who courageously stood up and spoke out rather than blending politely into the fabric of society. For centuries women in art have been depicted as passive objects of desire. Here, they actively grasp opportunity with both hands, exerting a physical force once considered most un-lady-like, a force that is replicated in the explosion of participation numbers throughout the state. Hidden rules, norms and conventions police both worlds of art and sport. It is in the reaction to the heretic that we learn the most about what is hidden.
